Martin Feinberg, Culver City Realtor, understands that not everyone has the means to become a homeowner the traditional way. Buying Culver City Real Estate can be daunting, and like many areas in the United States, Culver City has not been able to build enough affordable housing to keep up with the area’s demand.
Culver City Councilwoman Meghan Sahli-Wells understands the issues and is helping the community take steps to alleviate some of the problems by partnering with Habitat for Humanity Greater Los Angeles. The non-profit affordable homebuilder will build ten new homes on Globe Avenue, and Sahli-Wells is hosting a fundraiser to help begin the process. The event will take place on Wednesday March 22 at the historic Culver Hotel at 6:00 pm.
The Globe Avenue homes will be built on land deeded to Culver City by the now defunct Redevelopment Agency. The agency was closed in 2007 by the state legislature. However, the land had already been set aside specifically for affordable housing, even though funding had not been provided at that time.
Because the homes on Globe will be near the 405 Freeway, Councilwoman Sahli-Wells hopes to raise $7,000 to pay for air filtration systems. “It’s not an ideal location, but I want to try to do whatever I can to make [the potential homeowners] as safe as possible,” Sahli-Well said.
Members of the Culver City Presbyterian Church, along with other Presbyterian organizations, have already raised $750,000 to help build the new homes, according to Sahli-Wells.
Habitat for Humanity Greater Los Angeles Vice President of Resource Development Jennifer Wise said, “The great thing about this site is the homes can potentially be for people who work in Culver City. Unfortunately, there are families where parents have to work two jobs now just to be able to afford to live on the Westside, including in Culver City.”
Culver City Housing Administrator Tevis Barnes states that the ten homes will each have three bedrooms and two bathrooms and will accommodate up to six people. The construction should take about 18 months and will hopefully begin before the start of summer 2017. “Applications will be reviewed based on income and housing need with a preference given to persons who live and or work in Culver City,” Barnes explained.
